Speaker promotes resilience

A motivational speaker is in the city to give young students messages of encouragement and resilience.

Former boxer Brett Murray told a group of Willyama High students at the YMCA yesterday about his life and how to fight for success.

Mr Murray said he thought the kids really enjoyed the first part of the talk.

But he said some were afraid to say things for fear of being put down, something he was trying to cut through.

In the first part of his two-hour session, Mr Murray, who has teenage children of his own, struck a chord with young girls in the audience when speaking about fathers respecting and protecting their daughters.

“Every girl in this room is a beautiful, gorgeous princess needing protection,” he said. He also showed film clips from Rocky with the hope of inspiring kids to never give up.

Mr Murray travels across the nation, speaking to more than 50,000 people every year and is also the resident bully expert on the Channel Nine Today show and Channel Seven’s Sunrise.

He has also produced two surfing films, been nominated for the Australian of the Year award four times and written a string of books.
Tonight he will hold a father figure parenting seminar from 7pm to 8:30pm at the YMCA Hall.
